Kathy Hochul

Kathy Hochul

Kathy Hochul won a special election in NY-26, defeating Republican Jane Corwin in May 2011 with 48 percent of the vote. The vacancy had been created by the resignation of the incumbent after shirtless pictures of him appeared on Craigslist. Hochul was the first Democrat elected to that seat in over 50 years. She won with a strong campaign focused on saving Medicare from cuts proposed by Republican budgets, particularly the Ryan Plan to turn Medicare into a voucher program. Hochul is now seeking her first full term in the House.

Background:

  • As Erie County Clerk, she was the highest ranking elected female in the county.
  • Previously served as Deputy County Clerk for Erie County
  • Member of the Hamburg Town Board for 13 years
  • Legal counsel to U.S. Senator Patrick Moynihan
  • Legislative assistant to U.S. Congressman John LaFalce

Hochul's Positions on Key Issues:

  • 100% pro-choice and during her campaign pledged to work to improve women?s access to safe and adequate health services.
  • Champion for protecting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Strong supporter of abortion rights
  • Committed to women?s rights and particularly ending violence against women. In 2006, along with her mother and aunt, Hochul helped establish a transitional home for survivors of domestic violence and she currently is a member of its board of directors.

Committee Assignments:

  • Homeland Security
  • Armed Services Committee

Prospects: Race was very close in 2010, prospects are excellent

Opponent: Good. Hochul was able to hold her Republican opponent to 42% in this historically Republican district, but this district will be targeted and Hochul will need plenty of help.

Other Endorsements: Emily’s List, Women’s Campaign Forum
