Ann Kirkpatrick

Ann Kirkpatrick
Ann Kirkpatrick lost 44% to 50% against Republican Paul Gosar in Arizona's 1st Congressional District. Libertarian Nicole Patti received 6% of the vote.

Ann Kirkpatrick (D) is running for re-election for her 2nd term in Arizona’ 1st District. She faces a general election race.

Representative Kirkpatrick filled the seat of dishonored Republican Rick Renzi, who faced a federal indictment on corruption charges. Despite the fact that Arizona Senator John McCain was on the top of the ticket, Kirkpatrick defeated her Republican opponent with 56% of the vote.

Representative Kirkpatrick worked her way through law school and became the first woman deputy county attorney in Coconino County. In Congress she has stood out as a principled leader, sponsoring a congressional pay-cut.

Background

  • Kirkpatrick was elected as Representative to AZ-1 in 2008 and served for 2 years
  • She is the first Representative of the 2008 freshman class to have a piece of her legislation become law: an economic development plan on Hopi and Navajo land in her district
  • Kirkpatrick earned a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2009
  • She currently serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security, Small Business, and Veteran’s Affairs.

Kirkpatrick's Positions on Key Issues:

  • Women's Rights: Kirkpatrick voted in favor of ensuring fair pay for women with the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. In the Arizona state legislature, Kirkpatrick worked to create voluntary all-day kindergarten.
  • Reproductive Rights: In the Arizona legislature, Kirkpatrick constantly opposed the assault on women’s right to choose. In Congress, Kirkpatrick voted against the Stupack Amendment of the Health Care Reform legislation.
  • LGBT Rights: As a member of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee, Kirkpatrick has supported repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.

General Election Opponents: Paul Gosar, a dentist, won the Republican nomination after a brutal 8-way primary, with just 31% of the vote. On his campaign website Gosar claims that one of his goals in Congress will be to protect the “rights of the unborn”. He has spoken out against healthcare, and the supposed “federal funding of abortion”. His views are far from the mainstream, fueled by lies, and must be stopped!

Prospects: Kirkpatrick represents one of the most geographically and economically diverse districts in the nation. Her district has a large Native American population with whom Kirkpatrick has strong ties, having been born and raised on Apache land (in fact, her first words were in Apache). Republicans have targeted Kirkpatrick, hoping to turn her into a “one-term wonder” in a district that voted for McCain in 2008. For months they have been running radio-ads and robo-calls in her district, and Wall Street Journal recently named her one of the most vulnerable first-term congressional candidates.
