Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth Warren is running for the Massachusetts seat in the U.S. Senate to fight for Massachusetts' families and working class. Warren faces a competitive primary against multiple Democrats vying to take back Republican incumbent Scott Brown's Senate seat.

Background:

  • Harvard Law professor for over 20 years.
  • Served as Vice President of the American Law Institute.
  • Chaired the Congressional Oversight Panel for Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
  • For the past year, Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury to establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a new consumer financial protection agency.
  • Has devoted much of her professional life to studying the economic situation of the middle class, and has authored numerous books and scholarly articles on the subject.

Warren's Positions on Key Issues:

Warren has great experience and expertise on financial and economic issues. She can offer national leadership in the U.S. Senate on these financial issues, especially on their impact on consumers and women considering the economic times. We need her leadership there more than ever!

Warren's life's work has been dedicated to fighting for the working class. Warren understands voter concerns about jobs and the economy, and she wants to make sure that Washington no longer caters to the big banks and Wall Street. Throughout her professional history, Warren has been a consumer advocate, protecting America's taxpayers and holding trillion dollar companies accountable.

More specifically, Warren recognizes the financial pressures faced by women, the elderly, and the working poor. This is why she had made women's healthcare and pay equity a priority for her campaign. Warren is pro-choice and will be a strong pro- vote in legislation concerning women's reproductive rights. She is a progressive who will advocate for LGBT rights, civil rights, and environmental protections.

Prospects: Warren enters a crowded primary with seven other Democrats, including Alan Khazei, who finished third in the Democratic Senate primary in 2009 and has already raised $4 million; Setti Warren, major of Newton; Thomas Conroy, a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives; Marisa DeFranco, a lawyer; Robert Massie, a former candidate for lieutenant governor; Jim King, a lawyer; and Herb Robinson, an engineer.

Warren, however, has a national profile after being recruited by President Obama to set up a new consumer protection agency.

Opponent: Warren would face incumbent Scott Brown in the general election, who has raised $10 million for his campaign. Brown shocked the nation in winning the 2010 special election, and is running for his first full term.

National Democrats hope to win back the seat long held by the late Senator Edward Kennedy, and to retain control of the Senate.
