Kay Barnes

Kay Barnes is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Missouri’s sixth district against Republican incumbent Sam Graves. The district is in the northwest corner of the state, and includes all of Kansas City. The 6th district has been increasingly favorable to Democrats in statewide elections.
Background:
Barnes is currently a professor at Park University in Parkville, Missouri. Her feminist perspective is shown by acts such as helping to found the Women’s Resource Service Center and developing multicultural women’s speaking panels. In 1999, Barnes was elected as the first female Mayor of Kansas City, which composes about half of the district’s votes. In May of 2007, she left her position as mayor due to a two year term limit. Barnes holds a degree in secondary education from the University of Missouri, and two Masters Degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
