Alice Kryzan

Alice Kryzan

Environmental lawyer Alice Kryzan is running for the open seat in New York's 26th Congressional District. In an upset victory, Kryzan defeated two better funded candidates to win the September Democratic primary election. She will be running against Republican businessman Christopher Lee in the general election. The 26th District is located in the western part of the state extending from the city limits of Buffalo to the city limits of Rochester. Current Congressman, Tom Reynolds (R) is not running for reelection.

Background:

Now retired from active law practice, Kryzan previously worked at the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law and was the first woman partner in what was then the largest law firm in Buffal. A graduate of Trinity University in Washington, D.C., Kryzan was one of only twenty women in her graduating class from the University of Chicago Law School.

Positions on Key Issues:

  • Supports: Reproductive Rights; investment in clean renewable energy industries; access to affordable, quality healthcare for every family; US trade policies with environmental and labor protections; policies that provide families; with a living wage.
  • Opposes: Iraq War

Supported by:

  • Feminist Majority
  • National Organization for Women
  • EMILY'S List
  • NARAL
  • National Association of Social Workers
  • United Auto Workers

Prospects:
Listed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as a Red to Blue; district, Kryzan has an excellent chance of taking this Republican seat. Part of the Republican leadership, incumbent Congressman Tom Reynolds signaled the difficulty of keeping this seat in the Republican column when he decided not to seek reelection. The Cook Report has rated this race a Toss-Up.
