Jackie Speier is running in a special election this April 2008 for California’s 12th Congressional District. This seat was previously occupied by Congressman Tom Lantos (D), who died in early February 2008. The general election will be held in November 2008. Speier accompanied Congressman Leo J. Ryan to Jonestown, Guyana in 1978 where the Congressman was assassinated, and she was shot five times. When she returned home, Speier became the youngest person ever elected to the San Mateo Board of Supervisors. Speier has received recognition from the California National Organization for Women, Mobilization Against Aids, Planned Parenthood of California and the American Medical Association for her work in government. She has a BA from UC Davis and has earned her JD from UC Hastings College of Law.
