Dina Titus

Dina Titus

Dina Titus is running in Nevada Third Congressional District against Republican incumbent Jon Porter. Elected in 2000, Porter has been a centrist in Republican politics. The district is a “Y” shape that includes most of Clark County and the suburbs of Las Vegas. During the 2000 redistricting, it was cut to be almost equal between Democrats and Republicans.

Background:
In 1988, Dina Titus became a Nevada State Senator from the seventh district representing Clark County. She advanced to the position of Minority Leader in 1993.  Prior to entering the Senate, Titus taught at North Texas State University. When she moved to Nevada, she took on a faculty position at the University of Nevada in the Political Science Department. Dina earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science form the College of William and Mary; a Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D from Florida State University.

Titus Positions on Key Issues:

  • Supports:          Reproductive Rights, Research into Renewable Energy Sources
  • Opposes:          Iraq War, Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Incumbent Jon Porter Positions on Key Issues:

  • Supports: Iraq War, Unborn Victims of Violence Act, Drilling in the Arctic National, Wildlife Refuge
  • Opposes: Reproductive Rights, SCHIP, Mental Health Coverage bill, Minimum Wage Increase                     

Prospects:  Titus is very well-known and already represents a large part of the Third Congressional District as a State Senator. There has been a large increase in Democratic registrations since 2006. Independents have been voting Democratic by a 10 to 20 point margin nationally. It will not be an easy race, but she can win.
